If you are a great student at your University or College you are going to be able to apply for a funded course through your own institution. However places are restricted and only the best students are going to get accepted to study Chinese in China on a funded basis. You are going to be asked to submit an application form. Other than the application you will need a motivation letter detailing why you are looking to learn Chinese in China and how would it help you develop your skills and advance your studies. It is also important that you will show a great interest in the culture and language and will have a good knowledge of the country, a basic language skill and have already attended a basic Chinese course in your country.
You also need to ensure that you will state your previous achievements and a research that shows your interest. If you are writing a project about China or doing a research at the time of the application you are more likely to get accepted.
After submitting your application and getting shortlisted you are going to get invited to an interview with the board. These members are going to decide who they are going to put forward to the position and it is crucial that you will make a good impression. In some cases there might be Chinese people in the Board meeting, and you need to know the basic etiquette of China to be able to impress them.
